Quality is (mostly) back!

I have been using these Ampad Computation Notebooks for the last several years as an all-purpose notebook - meeting notes, to-do lists, recording ideas, etc. Basically using it as a bullet journal. The paper quality is excellent, it has sturdy covers, pages are numbered (which makes it easy to index the contents), and being wire-bound it opens flat. As others have noted, this was essentially a perfect combination of features. For several months, this product was substituted for a laughably poor version with flimsy covers, blindingly white paper, and poor assembly. For those of us who have become dependent on these notebooks, this was a real blow. I even wrote the company and complained. They were nice enough to send me one of the old style notebooks from some secret stash, and noted that they were working through production hiccups. When it came time to get a new notebook, I took a chance and ordered one here on Amazon. I'm pleased to report that this product is basically back to normal - the only differences are that it is now made in Malaysia (not the USA), and the cover is a somewhat off-putting shade of red, rather than the more dignified brown color shown in the description. I'm used to it now, and mainly just happy to have a steady supply available again.

Didn't realize my office-issue books were something special

I'd like to write one of those reviews about Hephaestus forging this notebook from the blood of the Gods or something, but that's not really true. This is really a very straightforward product. It's a nice color to stare at, the lines are generally not too dark to see what I'm doing, the pages are numbered, and the just-bigger-than-letter size works well with gluing in the occasional printout.I discovered fancier paper and journaling somewhat recently and have taken a few cues from that in how I set mine up. In particular, I put an index on pages 2-5. That, page numbers, and doing most of my note-taking in a bound book, as opposed to on pads with separable sheets, means I can find my notes way more easily.A downside to bound notebooks is I can't hole punch a page and put it in there. I've had to change my work habits a little: an entire spec doesn't go in there the way I'd sometimes added them to the binders I was using. But if I have a page or two that I refer to a lot, I'll glue that in. I'm paid to be an engineer, not to hand-copy lots of minutiae. As a side benefit, the bulk stays a little more under control. My One True Binder was getting pretty bulky.I've been starting my meeting notes at the beginning and my projects about halfway through, with a tab. That keeps my projects (relatively) contiguous. The paper is durable enough that tabbing pages works fine and that I can bang it around my desk and sometimes my work bag without really thinking about it for the three months or so it takes me to use all the pages. As a side benefit, I've come to realize that information about a project from three months ago is maybe not all that useful anymore or has changed. When I fill a notebook, I recopy whatever still matters. Honestly, it's not all that much and builds in a nice nudge to check on any projects that are simmering in the background. Also, it makes recopying things an active choice, so I have less clutter, whereas with my One True Binder, purging things was the choice, and I tended to have a lot of crap I didn't really need anymore.

Not for Doodling: A Professional-Quality Tool for Professional People

I was first introduced to the Ampad #22-157 Computation Book when on a high-tech product development team about a decade ago. Back then, the company paid for 'em but now I have to. After the frustration of using cheaper substitutes, I simply won't use anything else. Bottom Line: This is a professional-quality tool with no compromises. Anything less is just for doodling.PROs-Rigid and durable: stays flat when writing on any surface, covers and pages won't rumple like cheaper notebooks-Spiral binding is very strong, will not crush or distort, opens completely to lay flat-Graph paper rule-Numbered pages allow for easy indexing-A pleasure to write on: highest-quality paper accepts ink consistently without bleed-through (great with "Pilot G-2 07" pen)-Buff-colored paper reduces eye strainCONs-10x the price of the junky kids' notebooks but you get what you pay for here-Big and bulky but makes up for it with a large, comfortable writing surface

Excellent But Pricy Notebook

I have been a rabid user of quad-ruled composition books for many, many years, most of the time using the cheaper "Composition Notebook" variety. They as a great way to organize my writing, sketching, basic mechanical drawings, and other creative and work-related efforts. The paper is of good quality, with little risk of ink bleed-through even with gel or small felt pens. The biggest selling point for me, however, is the spiral binding. It allows you to work on any one page facing with the rest of the book folded under, reducing the footprint on your desk, lap, or kitchen table. Also, the page numbering allows you to cross reference your projects, keeping you better organized.Yes, there are cheaper options out there, but I feel this is worth the added expense, and is an excellent choice.

Different product then advertise and then what they used to sell.

These are not the original ones and have been changed. The cover is no longer as thick and durable, and the same goes for the paper. The color of the paper is also different, and overall, it feels lower quality, resulting in a lower-quality notebook. This is very disappointing. I guess I will have to find a new Comp book.

Expensive but you’ll like it

Well, I’ve been buying these about every six months for the last fifty years so I must be pretty satisfied. The first day of class my physics professor told us all to buy this specific notebook, and put everything in it. I did and still do. Works for me.
