Discovering Statistics Using SAS

This is probably one of the funniest books I've ever read. And that's saying a lot considering it's not a fiction or biography book. Field's comical examples actually make you want to keep reading...yes, reading about statistics! There are easy to understand explanations for almost every statistical situation a researcher would encounter. He covers the basic terminology, how to explore data with graphs, testing of assumptions, correlation, regression, logistic regression, t-tests, ANOVA (GLM1), analysis of covariance, factorial analysis, repeated-measures designs, mixed designs, non-parametric tests, multivariate analysis, and others. And with the help of Miles, he provides SAS codes for each test! Hallelujah!I would recommend this book to not only students in a statistics course, but for both biological and social science researchers.Let me put it this way...this book is saving my dissertation. I'm not a statistician; I'm an immunologist. My PhD research project, which started as testing for a set of genes, has now turned into a full-blown scoring system to predict kidney transplant rejection. I'm using logistic regression to study three different populations and then developing two different scoring systems for use by clinicians. "You want me to do what in Excel???" "SAS? You want me to be sassy??" Thank you Andy and Jeremy! You'll both be in my acknowledgments!

Great! I actually look forward to reading this .... can you believe it.... statistics book. I am on page 150 and have 550 more to go :)There are quite a few typos, and it isn't the best book for learning SAS, BUT any book that helps me understand statistical concepts is well worth the cost and then some.

I am a statistician at post graduate level, but i have found this book the most useful book of the subject. because of it capability to teach the subject in the most simplistic manner.

I've read a few chapters so far, and have found the material to be explained in a way that even us stats-challenged people can understand. However, I'm curious about when the companion Web site will be up. I want to play around with some of the book's examples, but I need to have access to the data sets. I hope the site is up soon. (Also, it's disappointing that, unlike the SPSS versions of the book, this version is not printed in color.)

After reading the reviews here and of the SPSS version of the book, I took the plunge. What a mistake. Jeremy Miles butchered the SAS portion of this book, rendering it almost useless. I worked through to the end of the fourth chapter and found over half the examples had mistakes in them. Some minor, but some really serious. Through perseverence you can finally, most of the time, figure out what he's trying to show you, but that's not what I expect out of a book that costs this much. I'm trying to learn the material for my job and this book has been a huge disappointment. Don't waste your money until / unless they do a re-write. I was going to buy some of Andy Field's other books, but not after this disaster.

I agree with most of the other readers. The SAS part of this book is not very good. I can use it somewhat for reference when I need to perform a task in SAS, but honestly googling produces better results. There are all kinds of problems with the datasets for the exercises. I also couldn't even find Chapter 19's CosmeticSurgery.sas7bat file on the companion website. However, the writing is excellent and entertaining. So for that alone it is still worth, but don't get this book to learn SAS. I've heard the SPSS version is excellent, so if you don't care what software you use that might be less frustrating for a beginner. I'm not sure about the R edition of the book.

I love this book. The humor makes the material memorable.

Book was received promptly and was in perfect (new) condition as ordered. Authors make learning stats "fun" with some witty humor throughout the chapters - all in all, the book is put together well.

Amazing book

Das Buch wurde quasi 1:1 von seinem Counterpart übernommen(http://www.amazon.de/Discovering-Statistics-Introducing-Statistical-Methods/dp/1847879071/ref=pd_sim_eb_1) und mag ja auch inhaltlich gelungen sein, dennoch ist es mehr als unbefriedegend, wenn man im Vergleich zur SPSS-Variante hier in der Version von SAS auf weniger Seiten und für mehr Geld ein Buch bekommt, welches nun nicht mehr in Farbe gedruckt, sondern bloß als schwarz-weiß Ausgabe zur Verfügung steht.Als die Lieferung eintraf, war ich mehr als enttäuscht.
