Sodium Borate Decahydrate (Borax) is an alkaline chemical that reduces the melting point of all minerals, including gold. Therefore it is commonly used as a flux when melting gold and other precious metals to help collect and burn away impurities that may be present. Also used in the classic slime making demonstration along with polyvinyl alcohol (sold separately). Sodium Borate Decahydrate appears as white, noncombustable crystals, slightly water soluble. When added to a flame, it produces a yellow green color. Sodium Borate readily forms colorless, monoclinic crystals.
