The Absolute Best
This is absolutely the best "how to" book on Arabic calligraphy!! I have searched for years to find the perfect book and my perseverance has paid off. This book shows everything needed to be an expert in the fine art of Arabic calligraphy. I have made my own pens, as per the author's instructions, and I must say that that exercise alone prepared my for the task ahead.I have coupled this book with others that I have on the history of the script and the language; a very good mix. Excellent book; it accomplishes all it claims.

Good little book!
Excellent book on mastering Naskh. I also purchased an online course through Udemy on Arabic Calligraphy. In conjunction with this book, it is very good instruction at a very reasonable price.

Maybe more of a quick reference mid-level beginners?
I don't think I'd call this a "for beginners" book as in something an absolute beginner would pick up and use to become proficient. It's more like a quick reference for mid level beginners. I say this because I feel it leaves out several important elements or they are not emphasized enough or explained well enough.1. It does not at any point tell what kind of paper would be best for practicing on. For those who are new to calligraphy this may prove very frustrating, especially if you've gone through the trouble of creating your pen and prepping your ink and such. You should be using special calligraphy paper or a very smooth paper. Regular paper that you normally put in your printer won't cut it very well. It should make note of this as attempting this on a regular piece of paper means you must reload your ink quite frequently as it quickly absorbs into the porous papers which can also lead to blotchy looking lettering. On smooth calligraphy papers the ink sets on top of the paper and glides across meaning far less reloading and smoother lettering. Also far less frustration on the part of the calligrapher.2. Proportions are the most important part of Arabic calligraphy and though this book does talk a little about them I felt it underplayed the role of these proportions and didn't explain them as well as it should have.3. I personally felt that there should have been (considering this is for beginners) some more effort to flesh out practice exercises. Several of the better books I've seen or own contain practice pages which can be copied and used again and again to increase proficiency. This book does not have that. It expects you to just practice writing. That's not necessarily wrong or bad, I just prefer that this type of book give you a little more directed practice. So, I say it's more of quick reference because the pages are simple and do not contain many exercises. This means someone like me who has done practice elsewhere through other books and already has learned more about the proportional use can quickly open to the letter and be reminded of the proportions (which are shown but not well explained). In some of my other books this takes longer to find.

Simpler approach to Arabic Calligraphy
I really need more useful explanation so additional references are required, but this book gives excellent step x step execution methods from carving the bamboo dip-pens to drawing guide lines and practicing strokes. The enlarged strokes are especially helpful --you see so much more than when viewing well-written actual examples for reading. This is the *elementary school* of strokework.
