The Death of the Incredible Hulk

Not a great ending but still a great story
If you're of the rare persuasion that has been wanting to finally see all the Incredible Hulk films you've found the right place. It's pretty incredible if you go down the deep dark hole of Marvel films how major The Incredible Hulk is to that effort. I would say, even, that all the Incredible Hulk TV movies (of which there are six- the first two episodes of the show were technically TV movies, and the first episode of Season 2, as well as the final three TV movies made in 1988 through 1990 in which they finally ended the series forever which strangely coincided soon after with Bill Bixby really resting in peace).I would say watch the six movies if you are interested in these old Hulk films. The TV show itself is fine, but it's a lot of the same thing over and over (which is not unusual if you watch old TV shows in a marathon, trust me) and really the best thing to do is just watch the six films. In my opinion they all still hold up quite well (with the best still being Bride of The Incredible Hulk). Why do I mention all of this? Well it all culminates in this final film. It's a tad bittersweet. There's a great story here, with bits of the regular Banner trying to get rid of his mutation (of which this film is actually the first and only time these films actually refer to it as such), but they added in a cool spy story. They never really say it is, and it's probably technically not, but in a lot of ways the spy lady is basically just Black Widow so that's kind of interesting if you follow all of the Marvel films in a time line.Anyway, this isn't a great review because really, in a way, I want to just discuss the entire series. I find it to be an incredibly fascinating thing. Most of the six TV movies are surprisingly well written, and unsurprisingly well performed (some of which even earned Emmys).Anyway, this film. Of the three made after the shows cancellation this is probably the second best one to me (the first one, The Incredible Hulk Returns, being the best one in my opinion), but I do also find the ending (which is the end of the entire show and the culmination of everything Bill Bixby, Lou Ferrigno, and everyone else that worked on these for 13 years did) really disappointing. Still, if you want to see how they tied the bow and ended it all then you should watch this. But be warned. The titular death is not up to snuff with everything building up to it.C'est la vie.

Okay, but not great
This was the third of the disconnected TV movies that aired after the Incredible Hulk series starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno went off the air. The title gives away what happens, so it is not a spoiler (especially after 30+ years) to say that the Hulk dies, but I think how it was done was kind of dumb, especially given what the Hulk's real powers are (as opposed to what is portrayed in the series). The crux of the story is that David is still trying to find a way of curing himself of the Hulk metamorphosis. He ends up working as a janitor at a top-secret government lab where a doctor, played by Philip Sterling, is working on an experiment that may help cure David. In the meantime, an Eastern European spy played by former Miss America is tasked to steal Dr. Pratt's research. I will not spoil the rest of the story from there, but needless to say, the Hulk finally dies in the end, finally bringing a resolution to the storyline that was never finished in the TV show because it was canceled after the fourth season, and only aired a few remaining yet to be aired episodes as a very short fifth season. The DVD just has the movie itself. I think there are multiple versions running around out there, but the version I got was an import from the UK (the US version seems to be out of print and very hard to track down) So, on this version, there are no extras. Of course, Bixby died a few years after making the movie so having any meaningful commentary track was impossible, but there was no making-of or behind-the-scenes material included either. Overall, the movie is better than the two other movies (The Incredible Hulk Returns and The Trial of the Incredible Hulk), but that is not saying a lot since those were pretty awful. It does give a nod to the super-soldier program that was the basis for the comic book story but does not go too deeply into it. Unfortunately, Jack Colvin either did not come back or was not brought back for this so there was really never a resolution for his character, which is too bad. He was horribly underused in the tv series and was only on screen for a few minutes in The Incredible Hulk returns never to be seen again.Chances are, most of the people who are going to watch this are those who are fans of the TV series. It is definitely not like the superhero series of today by any means, both in being faithful to the comics, or the special effects. Of course, in this, they were still painting Lou Ferrigno green and using cutaways during the Hulk-outs. The handful of special effects that were used (mostly at the end) was very basic and fake looking. I cannot say that everyone will love this, but if you like the series it is worth watching to see the full story arc.

Not The Ending We Deserved, But The Ending We Needed.
The third television film, which sadly served as the conclusion to the show due to a planned fourth installment being cancelled because of disappointing ratings for this adventure, is good, but it would have been nice to have Kenneth Johnson involved, and therefore, his idea for the series finale used, which was never written, due to the abrupt cancellation of the series. The only drawback is that the famous Lonely Man theme, written by Joe Harnell for the television series, which plays over the end credits, is too fast towards the conclusion of the piece. For the first and only time in the franchise (as starring Bill Bixby), there is a brief discrete scene of fornication, and a few frames of a woman interrupted while taking a shower, but nothing is shown. The violence is not graphic, and profanity is limited to a few hells and damns. There are subtitles, which is a major upgrade from the first two continuation films. Shame that Jack Colvin stepped away from acting due to suffering a stroke shortly after filming his scenes for The Incredible Hulk Returns, with his last film appearance being as Doctor Admore in Child's Play. The Death Of The Incredible Hulk is Not Rated.

Not as good as the tv show
I bought this to put an ending to the tv box set I have. The tv box set was brilliant but never brought things to a close. They made a few films after that were average at best in comparison but this brings closure so got it to complete things.

What a finale!
Considering this film is over 13 years old, the storyline and effects have you gripped. For those that have seen the previous films such as "The Return of The Hulk" and "The Trial of The Hulk" and were probably disappointed, all I can say is "third time lucky" really applies to this film.David Banner{played by the late Bill Bixby}, plays a not so bright janitor for a science lab, in the hope of getting close to a scientists experiment, that will finally rid him of his alter-ego.But all does not go as smoothly as planned, as terrorists hi-jack the projects findings and David Banner is forced to help. This film has plenty of action and good old fashioned love, but be warned, Lou Ferrignos brilliant performance as "The Hulk" will have you reaching for those tissues.

Always been a fan of the Hulk so bought this to complete my set , love Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno was magnificent as the Hulk. Not ashamed to admit that I cried at the end of this film, it was the end of an era and the end of the Hulk saga. HighlyRecommended but keep tissues handy.
