Mastering the Commodore 64 (Retro Reproductions)

I am just starting to learn how to program on the Commodore 64. For me this book introduced all the basics of programming on it better than anything else I have found. I also really liked how the code examples were short but gave you something fun and meaningful to play around with. I am hoping that we get more of these retro books as its nice to have a hard copy when your constantly flipping back and forth between the pages.

Published in 1983, it's an older book and there are typos that would throw errors if entered as code. For example, page 9 has the following code snippet: 10 PRINT CHRS(147)This should be the following: 10 PRINT CHR$(147)Most typos would be obvious to an experienced programmer, but might frustrate a beginner.Some of the longer code listings in the book are a bit hard to read. They appear to have been printed directly from the listings rather than typeset, and xerox'd a few times too often before being incorporated in the book.

The content of this book is sound, but it is hard to navigate. There's no index and it is difficult to reference parts of the book on the fly as you are coding.

It's not perfect. But it's a very good starting point if your looking to learn Basic and Assembly Language.

I didn't realize it, but it seems the content of this book was originally written and published back in 1983. So if you're looking for a book that will give you insight into all the incredible things the development community has discovered and learned about the Commodore 64 in the 37 years since then, look elsewhere.
