Murach's Android Programming (2nd Edition)

A practical book is a book that tries to explain how to do something. Murach’s Android Programming 2nd Edition is a practical book that is supposed to show the reader how to program in android. I judge practical books by whether or not they show me what they say they are going to show me and how often I have to go to resources other than the book (for example YouTube) to understand info presented in the book, clarify topics presented in the book, etc.This book miserably fails both of my criteria. It ties one other book I bought on Java as the worst programming books I have read. It is confusing and frustrating (to bad there aren't negative star ratings). I repeatedly find myself in the same routine—I spend a few minutes reading a section of the book, then I spend an hour or two trying to make sense of it online. (Just as a reference, a book I would consider excellent by the criteria I state above is Mark Lutz’s Learning Python).This book is a complete waste of money and time. I wish I could return it, but it is required for a class I am in

This is an OK book to use as a secondary or tertiary reference, but is far too outdated to be used as a current guide in the quickly advancing development environment of Android. Get a newer edition or better yet a different book!

This book might have been great (maybe) in its day, but Java has moved on, making this book difficult to use. The exercises are old and require varying degrees of update before you can use them. References are no longer correct. And finally, while the author if fairly good at telling you what to do, he fails to tell you much about why you are doing it.

The book is very detailed. Using for a textbook in my class. Other students at my school have also bought this book just to use it outside of class because of the approach Murach uses in teaching a person step by step how to do it right. Also using android studio.

I like the format of the book but it is just too out dated.
