This mat arrived and lay perfectly flat. Too often they warp, but the packing was good and this one didn't.The smaller size I got is good for quick cutting jobs. It's easy to keep on hand.

The perfect size for my limited space. Heavy duty, also. This board will last year's.

I have a large cutting mat that is permanently stored on top of my craft desk. It's been used for cutting fabric for years, and is not a self healing mat. Thus it has lots of gouges and scuffs. Not bad for cutting fabric, but horrible for detailed paper crafts and stuff.I ordered this mat because of it's self healing claims and the manageable size for storing in my craft drawer when not in use.It is indeed a thick mat with 5 different layers. However, if you look at the photos I've uploaded it's not any thicker than my regular cutting mat. The difference though is in the feel. The very center layer of this mat is very sturdy, it doesn't allow any flexibility which will keep it nice and flat.My old mat can be rolled pretty tightly for storage and isn't as strong as this new one.I did some cutting on my new Self Healing mat just to see how it worked.I love the super smooth, almost soft feeling of the surface. It made it easy to position my papers and keep them in one spot while cutting. The small cutting lines almost immediately healed over and disappeared. However a much deeper cut looks like it isn't going to heal quite as nicely.Since that deeper cut was intentional and nothing like I normal cut, I'm not taking off a star. It heals great with normal cuts.I also like the cutting grids which can be used for a large number of different projects. I'm thinking many of them would work great for quilting although I don't quilt at all.I found this to be a great cutting mat and look forward to using it for a long time.Disclaimer: I received this item free or deeply discounted in exchange for a fair and honest review.
